At the time I only had a few carving gouges and a lathe so I focused on creating an object that combined both.

A lot of my works are created in my head as I'm always busy designing. The concept was  to turn a vase on the lathe that was ornamentally carved.

The final design was the emerging butterfly/cocoon that became the focus for the piece.

I was still learning how to carve at the time and it took three attempts to create the vase that looked as correct as possible in the round. I painted the wings gold to give the work a truly special feel.

I was excited to be accepted into the exhibition and still really love the final creation and what it represents.
